Randall Sampson, PhD, ensures equity and access for students through innovative learning models. Dr. Sampson has experience at the K-12 secondary education level as an administrator, teacher and a national school innovation leader.

Dr. Sampson has experience at the 6-12 secondary educational level both as an administrator and a teacher. Dr. Sampson’s particular area of expertise in the area of closing the achievement gap has been honed through his work with the Harvard University Achievement Gap Initiative and through teacher quality research with Harvard University Director of the Achievement Gap Initiative Dr. Ronald F. Ferguson. As a practitioner, Dr. Sampson’s analysis of students’ performance data provided a national value-add approach to building sustainable learning environments. At Dr. Sampson’s former high school, such practice enabled him to identify gaps in student enrollment in Advance Placement (AP) courses and he lead the school district in creating systemic corrective measures to improve student learning outcomes. As a result, during Dr. Sampson’s tenure as an administrator, the number of African American students enrolled in AP courses increased by 600% and the number of Caucasian student enrolled in AP courses increased by 150%. Additionally, there was a 35% increase in students’ AP assessment results.
As an EdWorks National Technical Assistance Coach, Dr. Sampson has focused on equity and access while working to implement innovative STEM, Early College and High School Redesign models. In one comprehensive high school, prior to Dr. Sampson’s engagement, 58% of the students were enrolled in courses that led either to college or certification in a technical skill. The school of approximately 800 students offered 116 different electives; many of which did not meet college or career readiness standards. Following Dr. Sampson’s work with the school leadership, elective course offerings have been reduced to 60 and each course is part of a specific academic and career/technical path. Additionally, by the 2009-10 school year, 100% of the students will be scheduled in a course of study that leads to post-secondary schooling or certification; college and career-readiness. Over a two-year period, this site saw a tripling of AP course offerings and almost a 1000% increase in student enrollment in AP courses. This site also met the state graduation rate requirement, the first time since Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) state and federal mandates have been in place. This high school also saw a value-add of over $16 million to their local community, through reducing the high school drop out rate by over 30% in a two-year period.
